Royal Wedding Souvenirs

Durham NC lifestyle photographer

I wish I could share with everyone the range of souvenirs around London for the royal wedding, but I’ll share at least a few images. They range from fine china and crystal, to cheap tacky hats and fake crowns. You can even get yoruself some kate & Will condoms if you wish.

London is all ready for the big day. barriers are ready to be placed. media center is in full swing, and worldwide media is everywhere. Theres lots of energy and excitement about the wedding, or at least about the bank holiday that everyone gets. hey, nobody complains about an extra day off.

The Orangery at Kensington Palace

It wouldnt be a trip to London without a leisurely afternoon tea. There are many great spots for afternoon tea around London, but one that I’ve always fancied is The Orangery at Kensington Palace. I love srtolling through the Kensington Gardens, which is a giant beautiful park surrounding Kensigton Palace.

The Orangery is a beautiful historic building adjacent to Kensington palace. Its a wonderful place to have afternoon tea while out walking in kensington Gardens. Casual attire.

The Orangery offers delicious scones and pasteries, finger sandwiches, and even regular meals. I’m in love with their Rooibos Breakfast Tea (Newby of London). The tea sandwichs are nicely done and you cant beat such a beautiful setting. And, if all that wasn’t enough, its one of the few places to get afternoon tea where casual attire is suitable. You can come in wearing sneakers and jeans, so its perfect for us casual (sloppy?) Americans:)

After you’ve had your fill of finger sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and jam, cakes and pastries, then head outside and have a walk around the gardens. The garden immediately adjacent to the palace is sunken and beautiful when in bloom. I was disappointed that they cut down the tall hedge that used to surround it, but i suppose its more easily enjoyed by everyone now that it is wide open.

The palace and he grounds are currently undergoing some renovation and redesign, so parts are walled off and not open for viewing. The Gates of the palace are nice, but I am always reminded of the time when I was visiting on the anniversary of Princess Diana’s death, and seeing all the cards, flowers, and stuffed toys piled all around the fence. It was heart breaking and moving to see those and read them. Now it looks empty and bare. Its hard not to think about Princess Diana while being here for the royal wedding.

Justice Force 5 [Durham NC Music Photography]

Durham Chapel Hill Raleigh NC band photos
Is there anything better than a Superhero Rock Band? Maybe a superhero rock band dipped in chocolate?

You’d think that one concert a night was enough, wouldn’t you? Turns out a fantastic band, the super fantastic superhero rock band, Justice Force 5 were playing at the Wheelbarrow on the very night I was scheduled to photograph The Airborne Toxic Event at KOKO in London. I was stuck, so it seemed. Or was I? The Wheelbarrow is only a block away from KOKO, so as soon as the TATE show ended, I ran out and headed to the Wheelbarrow. The place was packed, and rightly so. This band is fantastic. They are so much fun to watch and the music rocked.

I have total respect for any man who proudly wears tights and a superhero costume. And the Wheelbarrow is a fine place, with no cover charge and reasonably priced drinks, a rarity in London. After the set finished, I chatted with riends, new and old, and got drawn into a game of foosball. I’m sooooo not a foosball player, but I ahd fun nonethelass. So, another late night. This time the bus was easy to find and dropped us across the street fro the flat. Can’t beat service like that!

Portabello Market [Raleigh Lifestyle Photography]

In london, every Saturday morning there is a massive stampede. A rush of shoppers, antiquers (is that a word?), tourists, and what have you. They all funnel onto Portabello Road. Its crazy crowded, but crazy fun. Lots of highbrow stuff but even for those of us who dont want to drop a mortgage payment on a china teapot, there are more modest offerings. It’s a mix of stores and fleamarket finds set up on tables. It’s wall-to-wall people. And as luck has it, the posh flat where I’m staying is only a few quick blocks from the center of things. So off I head with a friend to scour the market for fun gifts, cheap finds, and interesting wares. It was a glorious sunny warm day during the morning. Almost hot. Well, for London standards I suppose it has been hot, espcially for April. I didnt buy much, but did purchase 2 wonderfully funky unique warm scarves. I know, I know, it’s coming up to summer, so I know I can’t wear them for another 5 months, but I couldn’t resist.

Of course, soon we find ourselves hungry and thirsty, and in need of a nice lunch. Everything is bursting at the seams with no open tables unless they are in the blazing hot sun. So we search around and come across a small little spanish cafe with 4 tables outside in the shade . We take a seat and order a tasting menu of tapas. And a pitcher of sangria. OMG, it was the best sangria ever. Perfect for the warm day. Then the food arrived. It was yummy (mostly). Not the best I’ve had, but certainly enjoyable. I sat and enjoyed myself for almost 2 hours. Struck up conversation with a woman next to me for awhile. Overall, a wonderful time of relaxation, great people watching, and time with a friend.

On the way back to the flat, my friend and I stop at the market to get a few groceries. When we walked out, torential downpour. What happened to the sun? Yikes. We sprint to Starbucks (1 block) so I can check email. There was no use in dashing the 2 blocks to the flat because within the first 10 seconds, we were drenched. So we embraced the rain and sloshed our way home to dry out and relax for the rest of the afternoon.

I’m now obsessed with developing the most awesome sangria recipe:)
